Every day vast amounts of sensitive data are transmitted across networks and stored in databases, often raising concerns about data breaches, identity theft and unauthorised access. Safeguarding patient data to ensure compliance with healthcare data privacy laws such as HIPPA is becoming ever more critical. This is where Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKP), an advanced cryptographic technique, comes in. ZKPs provide a solution that allows for verification of patient information without revealing the actual data itself, thus maintaining privacy and security while allowing trusted interactions.
How Do Zero Knowledge Proofs Work?
ZKPs are cryptographic protocols that allow one party (the prover) to prove to another party (the verifier) that a statement is true, without revealing any information beyond the fact that the statement is correct. The core idea is that the prover can convince the verifier of their knowledge of a piece of information (such as a password or personal detail) without actually sharing the information itself.
To break this down, consider a simple analogy: imagine you’re trying to prove to someone that you know the solution to a puzzle without giving away the solution itself. Using ZKP, you can convince the verifier that you do indeed know the answer without ever revealing the specifics of the solution. This principle of ZKP allows for secure verification while keeping the underlying data completely private.
How Do ZKPs Support Privacy?
As companies and organisations increasingly move toward digital platforms for processes like onboarding, authentication, and regulatory compliance, there is a growing need for privacy-enhancing technologies. Traditional methods of data sharing often require sensitive information to be disclosed, which can expose individuals and businesses to risks such as data breaches or misuse of personal information.
ZKPs offer a novel way to address these concerns by allowing organisations to verify information—such as identity attributes, credentials, or personal details—without actually exposing the sensitive data itself. This can drastically reduce the risks of data leaks, while still ensuring that necessary verifications are conducted.
ZKPs can be applied across many industries from finance to government services. By utilising ZKP organisations can streamline processes, enhance security and improve customer trust.
How Can ZKP Transform Data Privacy in the Healthcare Industry?
One of the most promising use cases for ZKPs is in the healthcare industry, where privacy and security of patient data are critical. Healthcare providers need access to sensitive medical information for diagnostics, treatment and billing purposes, but they also need to ensure that this data is not unnecessarily exposed or shared, in compliance with regulations like HIPAA in the U.S. or GDPR in Europe.
Let’s consider a real-world scenario involving patient data in the healthcare industry. Imagine that a patient is undergoing a routine medical check-up and needs to provide a healthcare provider with their medical history, including details about previous treatments, medications and allergies. The traditional way to handle this would be to provide a full disclosure of their medical records, which would include all of their sensitive information.
With ZKPs, however, the patient could prove that they have undergone a specific treatment, have a particular medical condition, or are allergic to a certain medication without disclosing their full medical history. The healthcare provider could verify the necessary facts without learning anything else about the patient’s medical past. This way, patient privacy is preserved, and the healthcare provider still has access to the necessary information for treatment.
Additionally, ZKPs can be used to secure the sharing of medical research data. In collaborative medical research, multiple hospitals and institutions may need to share data on clinical trials. With ZKP, they can verify that the data they are sharing meets the required standards and is accurate, without exposing sensitive patient details. This helps advance medical research while ensuring patient privacy.
The applications for ZKP in Healthcare are extremely promising.
